A steal......... September 27, 2007 I am really pleased with my purchase! I bought 5 of these atlases for my 6th grade classroom. The lids love them and use them daily to look at just for fun. There's tons of DK detail and info. I would highly recommend this atlas and what a great price!
Best book deal I have ever recieved. September 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Two words. So many people are making the ridiculously stupid mistake of buying the $100 version.
LIBRARY BINDING.
Which is... a hardcover with a reinforced spine to give the book a longer life. It should cost more, but I think amazon made a serious pricing mistake, because at $20 this is byfar the best buy I have ever made with anything. Period.
You are getting a 15lb book the size of a small table, with its own case, somewhere around 600pgs for $20.
The atlas itself is beautiful. My friend guessed it to cost at least $200... a value I would expect when comparing it to the other "great" atleses, like the Times one. It costs $100, which is fair to begin with, before an 80% drop for the library binding. When I was forced to pay for a lost school book once I brought this in, showed the teacher and told him the price, then laughed my pants off at him. I think he saw my point. May not have gotten my yearbook or any other textbooks but it was worth it.
More on the book- people were certainly right about an inconvenient division for maps stretching across the double-pages. They could have either constrained it or cut it off well before the center (which is invisible) and resumed, with space to spare, on the other side.
The imagery is excellent. The smaller maps cover anything and everything I expect to see in an atlas. It is very well-rounded in this sense. The maps are detailed and beautiful, but so far I have not found a feature for "ruins."
The one thing that made me decide to get this (at least a used copy before I saw the library binding), was the fact that is has RESOURCE MAPS. Oh my gosh! Resource maps just like in the readers digest atlas of Canada. From agriculture and commodities maps to industry maps to mineral maps. This is perfect for what I often need it for. Many just didn't have a full fledged set like this one. Unfortunately though the inclusions vary with scale, and it seems they selected only the most pertinent resources, with some rather prominent ones being left out, such as olives in Italy.
Another thing is that a lot of pages fold out. While this can certaibly be seen as good, and is definitely better than the evil page divide, you are at risk of completely wrecking the page if you are not careful.
Finally I will reinforce. BUY it, but make sure it is the library binding version! Best deal I have EVER recieved on books, maybe on anything bought from a store (real or virtual). I now treasure the book.
Enjoy
Truly great atlas April 1, 2007 I can't praise this atlas highly enough. The only possible negative is that it is so great in size. You need a table to lay it open on.
It alternates page spreads of standard drawn maps with page spreads of satellite images of the same geographical unit. These images are available on the web, yes, but not correlated with high resolution (paper still beats the screen for legibility in my world) twins filled with geographical information.
I discovered this at Borders and gave it as an exchange gift to my brother's family when they visited for Christmas. My youngest niece, 7 years old, was galvanized by the book and took responsibility for seeing that it made it into their car, and then, again, back to the car when they were leaving Grandma and Grandpa's house later in their trip.
I finally had to break down and get one for myself. Truly the only problem I face is where I'm going to put it so that it is accessible when a given part of the world comes into view through the news, or through my reading adventures. It may become a summer project to build a table or stand that can hold it open and ready for perusing.
Wonderful Atlas with fatal defects December 5, 2006 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have emailed the publisher about this Atlas. They say they will correct the defects in the next edition.
In short, "maplover" is exactly right - the "crack" is a fatal flaw. There are many beautiful 2-page spreads that have almost 2 full inches in the middle pressed into the binding. This Atlas is not correctly bound. ANY serious large atlas will be bound so as to lay flat, revealing 100% of mapping detail. I own half a dozen such large atlses. This DK book is the only one that does not lay open flat. It was ruined by improper binding!
The binding is the same as used for mass market paperbacks, which, as we all know, we have to struggle to pry open sometimes. HOWEVER -- unlike a paperback, the DK Atlas is solidly glued to a 1/8th inch thick backing board that cannot be loosened up to allow the binding to even come close to lying open as flat as a paperback can be pried open.
Such binding has never been used for atlases before. What was DK thinking? Somebody really needs to be demoted or fired for this.
DK responded to emails and says they will correct this. I pray so. The Atlas is so beautiful but for this flaw.
BUT ... there is also the question of completeness and reliability. I found at least a few critical placenames absent. These were places of significance. To omit them on any serious map would be to reveal profound incompetence. It's as though, as I told DK, the maps were prepared or edited by person(s) ignorant of the geographical areas they were responsible for. This is unacceptable and quite unbelievable.
I returned my copy for a refund.
I conveyed my criticisms to DK and got positive responses. They are a fabulous publishing company. Hopefully, they will correct the problems.
I also conveyed to DK my concern that their website portrays this particular Atlas incorrecly. They have samples of 2-page spreads with NO tight bindery crack. Thus, judging from their web pages, one would be woefully misled about the actual product.
They accepted this observation as well. I don't know if they fixed the web page; haven't checked.
