3 out of 5 stars Non-verbal communications 101   November 23, 2008

This book implies a business focus that it does not consistently deliver. The subtitle of the book, "How to read anyone in 3 seconds or less" is also contradicted by the fact that it is often changes is body language that convey the most meaning.

This book provides a good overview to the subject of non-verbal communications, especially conveying how much it is used, and how frequently it is not noticed consciously. The author demonstrates considerable knowledge, especially with interesting tangential facts. Unfortunately, I did not find this book very usable by itself. This was somewhat due to the presentation focusing more on details than on themes. Even there, not many details were provided. Perhaps the author has more useful information available for purchase through his website- something he mentions a few times in the book. For those looking for a single book reference, I would recommend "What Every Body is Saying" by Joe Navarro.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Helpful Book   October 27, 2008

I found this a very helpful book in many ways.

The first it was very thorough. It covered most, if not all, the obvious interpretations of body language.

The second was it was written in a practical, easy to understand way that I actually remembered the materials as I read them. At the end of each chapter Hogan had a "Take Away" section that summarized the main points...and a short exercise section that reinforced what I learned...and made me think so it embedded the lessons even more deeply.

Hogan made the point that the reason the ability to read body language (or non-verbal communication) is so important is the conscious mind can manipulate words and actions....but the unconscious mind doesn't edit what comes through...and that shows up in the body language.

He also points out that non-verbal communication is only part of the whole communication process...so don't rely on it alone. It took a lot of the stress and anxiety out of wondering what was on people's mind when I first meet them.

Early on he made the point that women are better at reading body language than men. Maybe I can catch up.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, Read Anyone in 3 Seconds or Less?!   October 26, 2008

Understanding the Covert Language of Business for Better Persuasion & Influence

Don't mix up simplicity with lack of sophistication. Best things in life always have intricate simplicity, a straight line approach. Look at iPods & Apple Macintosh. So simple and elegant. Yet so powerful in doing what you want to achieve.

Likewise, The Secret Language of Business has that Midas touch which breaks down the complexity of effective communications. It explains the in & out of body language & non-verbal signals, broken down into churn size for instant applications, if not as a step by step guide.

As a Pure Numerologist, I read people through their birth dates and their most commonly called names. I am always interested to know what else can help people to read anyone in 3 seconds or less. Pure Numerology can do just that. For those who don't quite trust that esoteric or occult path, they now can rely on this book to do the same!

Same result but different routes.

If you enjoy Coffee with Kevin Hogan, the author's weekly newsletter, you would definitely love this book like me. The power of knowledge is NOT in your awareness NOR the mere understanding of it. The power is in your ACTION in applying that knowledge in YOUR life. To this end, Hogan gives you not only "Takeaways" (looks like food to me) to consume, but "Worksheets" for you to ACT on. It's only through actions that knowledge comes alive and brings results. I encourage you to do just that: Read, Contemplate, Act and Review. Then, start the same cycle again to get even better value out of the book. This book itself (or ANY book, ANY training program) would NOT help you NOR change you, but YOU can help or change yourself with this book by reading people accurately.

One word of advice, because of the structure in persuasion, if you have Hogan's other books, you should read in the following order:

1. The Psychology of Persuasion
2. The Science of Influence: How to Get Anyone to Say "Yes" in 8 minutes
3. The Secret Language of Business

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money In 3 Seconds Or Less   July 7, 2008

This book is very poorly written and contains only basic information on body language.

Not sure how anyone could possibly consider this to be a business book. The examples given are questionable and not backed by proof. I was very disappointed and should have paid attention to other reviews before spending time on this dud.

Save your money - in 3 seconds or less - and don't buy this book.
