4 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for breadth, 4 for depth   April 14, 2007
In Modelling Transport, Ortuzar and Willumsen touch on a multitude of subjects related to transportation modeling. The book introduces each step under the traditional 4-step transportation planning process in a separate chapter, in addition to topics such as discrete choice analysis. The way the topics are treated is perfect for someone with previous familiarity with the subject; it would be extremely difficult to hammer out all the details of transportation planning in a single 500 page volume. I would not recommend this book to the more inquisitive reader new to the subject as -in most cases- it may not explain why things are done the way they are. That said, I would strongly recommend it as a desktop reference for someone that may need a refresher on some of these topics from time to time. I would've given the book 4.5 stars if half stars were allowed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text book   December 18, 2002

This book is a valuable resource for students, teachers and
researchers. The coverage is broad within the subject area,
whilst the material is both accessible and authoritative.
This third edition includes valuable extensions and updates
to the earlier ones.

I am glad to recommend this text to my students at each of
undergraduate (BEng/MEng), taught postgraduate (MSc) and
research (MPhil, PhD)levels to support their learning and
use of transport models. The book makes an especially suitable
text for transport modelling courses at MSc level.

4 out of 5 stars Just about the best book available on the subject   April 5, 1999

I find "Modelling transport" (2nd edition) to be the best available in its field. It covers just about everything a transport modeller has to know and benefits from one of its authors being an academic researcher and the other a consultant. Both are recognized worldwide as being renowned experts, and the fact that one has an academic bias and the other a practical inclination makes the end product just about unbeatable. In recent years it has been the only reference work I have needed to consult. The title "modelling transport" makes it clear that the book does not cover economic and other evaluation techniques. I think that it would be an even better product if it did, considering the close relation between a transport model and the economic evaluation procedure which should be applied to determining the benefits of the network modifications it models. Inconsistency between the model and the evaluation can lead one to doubt the results of the latter. Maybe this point could be addressed in the third edition.

5 out of 5 stars Very clear and complete, therefore extremely useful.   March 29, 1999

I frequently use Ortuzar and Willumsen book (I have used both editions) and I think it is one of the best books in this field. It gives the fundmental basics of transportation in a clear and straight-forward way. For the cloth cover edition price, it is a good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent support for lecturing transport demand   March 27, 1999

The book describes all the basic elements of transport demand modelling in a comprehensible way, including recent developments on the different subjects. It gives detailed references pointing to the original sources and to directions for further reading. We have used this book as a main reading material for our MSc level Transport Demand course; specially for Trip Generation and Modal Split models.
