5 out of 5 stars The Best Guide book for Hawaii   September 1, 2010
Fred
As a property owner and frequent visitor of Kauai for many years, I can assure you that the restaurant recommendations in this guide are the best I have seen by a fairly good margin. You do have to read the recommendations very carefully, because they put strong emphasis on getting your moneys worth. They also are very specific, for example if they tell you "order the fish at this plate, but not the beef", the fact that they gave it their "ono" (eat here) does not make the beef worthy of ordering. Several restaurants they refuse an "ono" are indeed overpriced and some of the "onos" are for places that fix only good, not great food but are bargains. By the way, one of the real bargains in Islands are the local foods such as Laulaus, Poki and Korean short ribs (as well as others). The same rules apply to beaches and Hikes, read the reviews and don't just go by the "onos". Their guides to other islands are similarly the best. The authors know Kauai better that the other islands because they live on Kauai, but they have the local insight to all the Islands tht makes these the best guidebooks to the Hawaiian Islands.

5 out of 5 stars Great hiking and beach reviews   August 31, 2010
Andrew Roberts
We lived by Maui Revealed on our firt trip to Hawaii, so buying The Untimate Kauai Guidebook for our latest trip was a no-brainer. We went on three major hikes all recommended by the book that we probably would not have found otherwise. We highly recommend the Nualolo trail/Nualolo cliffs/Awawaphui trail loop. It's 11.3 miles and the last 3 are uphill, but the views of the Nualolo Valley and the NaPali coastline are outstanding. Bring lots of water and start early. We also really enjoyed the Alakai Swamp trail in Koke`e State Park. As the book says it's the highest swamp in the world and unlike anything you've ever seen, plus the mountain ridge you have to traverse to get there offers incredible views as well. The outlook at the end of the trail was fog covered the day we went, but still really cool. We also did the "Secret Tunnels" hike in the adventures section. Cool hike through tunnels drilled through the mountains, but the views at the end of the trail were not as great a the book described. The trail to get there was extremely muddy, which we expected, and there was a mountain stream, which we cooled off in that was pretty awesome, but overall there are better hikes to take than this one.
The beach reviews were spot-on and our favorite was the Sealodge beach on the north shore. There was only one other person using the beach for the first hour we were there and the water was great for snorkeling.
We stayed at the Waimea Plantation Cottages the first few nights and absolutely loved it. The surrounding area was mostly desert, so we were quite surprised by the lush tropical paradise we found at the cottages. The cottages and grounds are very well maintained and extremely quiet and peaceful. We wish we had spent our entire vacation there.
We also stayed at the Sealodge, which had a great location and spectacular views, but the condo was boring and average and had a bit of a cockroach problem.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the Secrets of Kauai!   August 26, 2010

We bought our first "Ultimate Guidebook" years ago on a recommendation from a friend when we traveled to Maui. We had been to Maui many times, but decided to buy it and were so glad we did! So, when we were returning to Kauai on our 25th Anniversary to re-create our honeymoon, we bought the Kauai Guidebook. The book was so helpful just like the Maui Guidebook, giving great information about the best luaus, restaurants, activities and beaches. It contains info for secret beaches and out of the way places to see that the average traveler will never know about! This purchase was actually made as a wedding gift for a couple traveling to Kauai for their honeymoon because we enjoyed our copy so much. We could have loaned ours, but didn't want to part with it! Anyone traveling to the Islands will be glad they purchased any of the Ultimate Guide Books, whether it is your first trip or your tenth, because you will find many things you never knew were there to explore!

5 out of 5 stars Best guide book for Kauai   August 24, 2010

Excellent guide book for Kauai, has independent ratings of food, beaches, facilities, where to go and where not to go. The kind
of book you need when you are on the ground in Kauai.

5 out of 5 stars Made my vacation truly memorable   August 16, 2010

This guidebook was recommended to me by someone who is currently living in Hawaii, and it was definitely worth it. I read for pleasure a lot, and the writing style made it MUCH more than a guidebook. I literally devoured the book, even those parts that I knew I couldn't get to see or do. I spent a week hiking by myself in the Waimea Canyon in Kauai, exploring little known trails, and this book was perfect for that type of exploration. It had the important details about trail conditions, 3-D maps showing the topography, things to bring, places to see and all those little things that spells the difference between an enjoyable hike and sheer misery. I did look over a couple other guidebooks, but this one was by far the best suited for my needs.
