Product Description
Choosing a mate is like picking house paint from one of those tiny color squares: You never know how it will look across a large expanse, or how it will change in different light.

Meet Janna and Graeme. After a decade-long tango (together, apart, together, apart), they're back in love -- but the stress of nine-to-five is seriously hampering their happiness. So they quit their jobs, tie the knot, and untie the lines on a beat-up old sailboat for a most unusual honeymoon: a two-year voyage across the Pacific. But passage from first date to first mate is anything but smooth sailing. From the rugged Pacific Northwest coast to the blue lagoons of Polynesia to bustling Asian ports, Janna and Graeme find themselves at the mercy of poachers, under the spell of crossdressers, and under the gun of a less-than-sober tattooist. And they encounter do-or-die moments that threaten their safety, their sanity, and their marriage.

Join Janna and Graeme's 17,000-mile journey and their quest to resolve the uncertainties so many couples face: How do you know if you've really found the One? How do you balance duty to others while preserving space for yourself? And, when the waters get rough, do you jump ship, or do you learn to navigate the world...together?

3 out of 5 stars Good cheeze, too much whine!   August 27, 2010
Captain Ron
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Not only could this book be twice as good, it could be half as long. The humor, sea stories, the ups and downs of navigating the Pacific and the writing describing the interaction of our newlyweds with the boat, the constant repairs, the sea and the inhabitants of sun drenched islands was the best half of this book and I can see how many could relate to it. I chuckled out loud many times. The quality of writing is excellent and the author can put you in the scene.
However,
The constant whining of the author concerning her new/old relationship with her husband got so repetitive I began to skip sentences, then paragraphs and finally almost entire chapters to escape. I cannot for the life of me imagine why Grahme clammed up, (sarcasm intended) I would have fed her to the sharks about Micronesia. : ) I liked the quote when she was quizzing him about why he was (again) being quiet, he replied "Its not always about you Jenna".
Yes, I did see the title that includes "a woman's search for the meaning of wife" so I was somewhat prepared for the girlie stuff. My review is from the guys viewpoint, so ladies please don't take offense. Final thought, if you don't mind getting a glimpse inside the mind of a neurotic squirrel, overdosed on espresso, caught in a blender, off her meds, then read on. Then again guys, if you need to know how your significant other thinks, this may be the book.

5 out of 5 stars More than I expected   August 14, 2010

This was more than a book recounting their voyage across the Pacific... it was a helpful source of relationship advice and, to some extent, an opportunity for self-evaluation... i saw alot in myself in the author and will walk away a little wiser as a result...

5 out of 5 stars A fun, lovely, educational and adventure-filled read   August 9, 2010

I took a writing class with Janna years ago, so it was a thrill to read her book on several levels. I really loved the book and her writing, and found so much to relate to in it, despite the fact that I'm not sailing around the world on my honeymoon, married, a teacher by trade ... or experiencing the exact same things Janna went through while penning this book. I am not a sailor either, and I enjoyed learning about sailing, boats, the excursion, etiquette, etc.

Janna's writing style in this book is journal-esque and it's easy to read. That doesn't mean the content is simple. There are great and full stories in every chapter and vignettes that are funny, sad and poignant.

I was surprised to see the recent "1 star" review and a comment from someone whose take-away was that Janna didn't like her husband. (What?) Anyone who has been in a relationship realizes that there will be ups and downs, and Janna is not only brutally honest about that, but she also learns a lot about her relationship through this experience. I felt like I even learned some things about the way I handle relationships by reading this book, too. Motion of the Ocean is a great summer read and one to share with friends. I plan to pop this in the mail and send to a girlfriend in NYC.

5 out of 5 stars Janna's Excellent Adventures!!! A++++++++!!!   July 27, 2010
Paul Keeper (Berry Creek, CA. United States)
I was pleasantly surprised by how wonderful this book truly is. I would find myself laughing and tearing on many of the pages as Janna reveals her tale with unflinching honesty. True life sailing adventures are the majority of books I read and own. I found myself thinking that if an alien race came to earth and asked for one book that would describe human life best, I would hand them this book! I loved this book so much, I bought a copy each for my sister and mother but wouldn't surrender my own even under the condition that it later be returned. I simply didn't want to part with it! Here is the truly surprising part, I find it comparable to Shakespeare! The wit, wisdom and insights in the human psyche with it's strengths, weaknesses, foibles and vulnerabilities are all to be found in Janna's excellent adventures. Highly recommended!!!
