Product Description This highly successful book has been called the most comprehensive text on the market, providing students with needed career theory as well as practical techniques and examples. Through the author's clear writing style, case examples, tables, and exercises, students develop a solid understanding of the theoretical models of career counseling and are thoroughly exposed to the practical information on how to effectively counsel clients about career issues. As demonstrated by the text's new subtitle, 'A Holistic Approach,' this substantially revised Seventh Edition reflects the growing emphasis on looking at the "whole person"--values, temperament, talents, and passions--to determine his or her best career fit.

Abysmal January 5, 2009 If you're considering teaching from this book, please don't. If you have been assigned this book as part of a class, you have my sympathy. If you want to learn about career counseling on your own, pass this book by in favor of the many better books available.
It became clear to me as I was reading this book that the author had maybe 25-50 pages of actual material to present, but was tasked with writing a book and not a pamphlet, so proceeded to expand, obfuscate, and repeat the same points over and over again to reach book length. The explanations of the various theories of career counseling are as clear as mud and tend to make all the theories sound like slightly different versions of one another. It took intense discipline on my part to plow through this book because it was so dry and uninspiring.
"Painful" is an Understatement... August 29, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the worst textbook I have ever had to read. The information is poorly presented. The language and writing style cloud meaning instead of making the theories clear and useful. It is difficult to believe that counseling students were Zunker's intended audience. I am only reading this book because I have to for a class, but I haven't learned anything from this book at all so far. Do not buy this book unless you have to.
My least favorite textbook ever March 18, 2008 Sorry, but I found this textbook poorly and painfully written. My professor uses it because apparently it contains material that will be on the NCE. If it is such an important textbook, the material should be presented better and more clearly. It is just painful to read.
Very good guide to career counseling. December 14, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is well written and has excellent coveraqe of all the essentials. It is very current and provides many practical ideas for counselors. The author is culturally sensitive and knowledgable about the most recent research. Highly recommended for graduate school courses in career counseling.
Painful September 3, 2007 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is not useful. Many of the theories presented are outdated and the attempt at multiculturalism is offensive at best and only serves to present non-white cultures as "other". This book is poorly written, and in fact oddly written. If you don't have to buy this for class, don't buy it.
