Product Description These outdoors are truly great, showcased by misty Milford Sound and Rotorua's thermal pools, and the indoors ain't so bad either - dip into Wellington's art scene or the latest restaurants in Auckland...

Definitely Useful July 19, 2010 HIAPO-MATTHEWS, Kimi Kii (San Diego, CA USA) The information about Auckland Airport wasn't as detailed or reliable as other travel guides I'd checked out, but the maps for the few parts of New Zealand I visited were pretty accurate. Sometimes I took road trips without buying a more detailed map because the small ones in the travel guide, combined with how well-marked New Zealand's roads are, were enough to get me there.
There were a couple of really good tips on places to stay that worked well for me at the last minute, probably because I went during the off season. The descriptions of activities and attractions were generally very dependable and included useful details. Much of the extra stuff, such as tips, human interest/native color pieces, sidebars on specific genres of activity, etc., ended up being very worthwhile. Unfortunately, it's a book that's meant to be read from cover to cover, because the useful information isn't presented in such a way as to be easily findable if you're just looking for something specific. You kind of have to stumble on it.
It's definitely worth the Amazon price, though. I used it because of the three I ordered, it's the only one that got to me before I left for my trip. And, it certainly wasn't a waste of money.
New Zealand guide June 13, 2010 Helen Quinn (Texas, USA) Very thorough book, with maps, history, good details. It will help anyone taking a trip to New Zealand.
Great for planning your trip around New Zealand May 11, 2010 L. Mills (Kalispell, MT) Lonely Planet, as usual, is the book to have while traveling in a foreign country. This book has helpful details on transportation, accommodation, food, activities, detailed maps, websites, phone numbers and more.
You wouldn't have time to do half of the things this book gives you the details for -- which means you have plenty of great options to choose from according to your interests!
I highly recommend this book for those who like to plan their traveling, or get a little orientation once they've arrived in their destination.
Do Not Get the Kindle Edition April 13, 2010 Oliver (Los Angeles) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Please note: this review is ONLY about the Kindle version, which I found unusable. I am NOT reviewing the soft cover book.
I've used Lonely Planet books for over 20 years. I'm also very happy with my Kindle, which I take with me whenever I travel. So, I was really looking forward to getting my first Lonely Planet book in Kindle format. Unfortunately, putting a guide book on a Kindle just does not work. Maps and pictures are, of course, completely useless on the Kindle. But the problems go beyond that. The Kindle works fine for novels and for most non-fiction books. But with a travel guide, one needs to flip through pages quickly, refer back and forth between pages, and use the index. I found the Kindle version of this book completely useless, and will end up buying the regular soft-cover version to plan my trip.
P.S. -- the Kindle version works pretty well on an iPad. In some ways, the iPad version is better than a paper book. For example, you can click directly into websites from the book. The maps are also useable on the iPad, perhaps even a bit better than a paperback book. But, the index still does not work and I still found it a bit frustrating in that it is hard to flip from section to section, as one would with a paperback travel guide. In summary, this book is useless on the Kindle. As between the paperback and the iPad, I'd say it is pretty much a toss up.
Essential for backpackers December 27, 2009 Zeljka Tukic (Split, Croatia) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you plan a trip - I would recommend a longer one if you really want to experience the country - this guide is necessary to have, it would give you every essential information you need to know about everything, with appropriate dose of humor and wit. If you are buying this book just for mere dreaming of New Zealand, it will give you pretty good touch of the country, but it doesn't go deep into the material, so don't expect too much - rather buy real travel memoirs. This book is primarily for people who are really going to this country, who need basic information to orient themselves around, and who intend to learn more by themselves on the spot. Just like real backpackers :-)
