Amazon.com Review Joe Pauker, who refers to himself as "a goof," has compiled what is perhaps the funniest, most original guide available to the city of Amsterdam. Get Lost! The Cool Guide to Amsterdam, which is clearly not aimed at mainstream travelers, will take you to the places that standard guidebooks don't bother to cover (at least not in any detail): sex shows, hemp and 'shroom shops, and places where you can get free samples of cheese when you're too low on cash to buy food. Pauker's not shy about sharing his opinions, either. On taxis: "They're expensive, and they treat cyclists like shit, but if you really need one ... [they're] very comfortable." On banks and developers who would evict squatters: they're "conservative pigs who care more about money than people." And on cannabis: "nederwiet (Dutch grown weed, such as Northern Lights) is spectacular." Off-the-wall humor and opinions aside, you get the feeling that Pauker really knows Amsterdam and wouldn't give you bum advice. Hotels and hostels (including the comfortable couches at Schiphol Airport), restaurants, attractions, and shopping are all covered in some detail, and obvious care was taken in selecting those establishments hip enough (and cheap enough) to make it into the book. If you're the kind of traveler who might need the Dutch translation of "stoned as a shrimp," or if you simply appreciate a fresh perspective and directions away from the trampled path, let Pauker be your guide to the "coolest, most happening city in Europe."
Product Description This ultimate listing of most underground places in Amsterdam is better than ever--completely revised and updated. For travelers who want to go beyond convention and sample real life in the world's hippest city, it lists bars, music clubs, cannabis cafes, movable restaurants and other enticing attractions that "Grandma's Guidebook" never considered. This legendary guidebook, written by an Amsterdam resident, leads alternative travelers to the real thing.

More for Hippies... September 16, 2008 Not a bad book at all! I am not a hippie though. If you are, which is perfectly great, this is the book for you! It is all about finding the best deals and an honest review on all hotels, hostels, restaurants, night life and of course "coffee houses" hee hee!
Terrific Book July 14, 2008 I am going to Amsterdam for 3 weeks next month. First time. I have read several other guidebooks but I have to admit, I really felt that I was getting the "inside scoop" with this book. It can be a little crass, but it's quite well written and pretty funny at times. Mostly, I felt I got a lot of good information from it. I was afraid it would all be about pot smoking, but it wasn't ay all. The "cheap eats" were worth the price of admission alone.
I highly recommend this book!
Quirky and Informative March 26, 2008 This guide was very helpful containing not so usual info about the usual sights, as well as having a good readability. Not like other strict guides, that seem written by computers, this guide offers opinions that allow the reader to make better decisions about what to see and how to see so much of the city - it's like having a freind along to guide you.
Great Book for It's Purpose February 8, 2008 This is a great supplemental book for Amsterdam if you are looking for off the beaten track places. I know that my partner and I will use this book well when we go to Amsterdam.
Well organized and not cluttered December 27, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A great guide for finding your way around Amsterdam. Unlike other guides, the descriptions and information are very opinionated and to the point--don't expect 12 page picture tours of museums. There is a decent section on "coffee houses" (High Times recommends Barney's), but very little attention is given to the oldest profession. Pauker does recommend some escort services that don't exploit women (for the socially conscious individual) and a few voyeuristic experiences such as live intercourse. And although this guide may be geared toward the college student or other individuals with similar tastes, the suggestions for breakfast, late night snacks, quick eats, shopping, and hanging-out in general will benefit even the most conservative traveler (though she'll probably be annoyed by the author's naive understanding of economics). Definitely worth the $10, though I recommend that you accompany this book with a mainstream detailed supplementary guide such as Frommer's, which also comes with a good map.
