Amazon.com Review Discover The Best of Coasta Rica Content from Frommer's Costa Rica 2010 First coming to the attention of international travelers in the mid-1990s, Costa Rica is currently—and consistently— one of the hottest vacation and adventure-travel destinations in Latin America, with over two million visitors each year. Despite the boom in vacationers, Costa Rica remains a place rich in natural wonders and biodiversity, where you can still find yourself far from the maddening crowds. The country boasts a wealth of unsullied beaches that stretch for miles, small lodgings that haven’t attracted hordes of tourists, jungle rivers for rafting and kayaking, and spectacular cloud- and rainforests with ample opportunities for bird-watching and hiking. In addition to the country’s trademark eco- and adventure-tourism offerings, you will also find luxury resorts and golf courses, plush spas, and some truly spectacular boutique hotels and lodges. Having lived in Costa Rica for more than 18 years, I continue to explore and discover new spots, adventures, restaurants, and lodgings—and my “best of” experiences keep on coming. In this chapter I’ve selected the very best of what this unique country has to offer. These places and experiences are covered in greater detail elsewhere in the book; this chapter is merely meant to give you an overview of the highlights so that you can start planning your own adventure. Costa Rica's Top Destinations by Category The Best of Natural Costa Rica | The Best Beaches | The Best Adventures | The Best Bird Watching | The Best Luxury Hotels and Resorts | The Best After-Dark Fun |

Not up to date and THEY DON'T CARE! August 16, 2010 ADR Professional BEWARE ... Rincon de la Vieja National Park, a highly rated attraction is CLOSED on MONDAYS. It has been for over 5 years, but Frommer's doesn't mention it (Fodor's does, I found out). We wasted an entire day because of the time and distance we drove to get there.
I emailed Frommer's when I got back a few weeks ago and NO REPLY. Translated: WE DON'T CARE.
From now on, it's Fodor's for me.
Pura Vida! (Pure Life!) April 15, 2010 Enrique Torres (San Diegotitlan, Califas) I'm a big fan of the Frommer's travel books. I have used them for years whenever I plan a trip outside of the country. That said, I must say that I am extremely impressed with the newest editions. I guess it has been awhile since I used one because this is a really awesome guide. Since most people rely on the internet for their information I guess Frommer's had to up the ante to stay competitive. This is book is a beauty. The book is split up into 15 informative chapters that are not your ordinary geographical explanation and where to go in each area. Instead they have made it fun by putting a beginning chapter highlighting the Best Of everything from beaches , hikes and such to websites. This is super useful and cuts your time in search of nirvana.Next is a good section on what may be called a cultural perspective or Costa Rica today. After these introductory chapters you are ready to plan your trip. The book will help you with a calendar of events and suggested itineraries. They suggest various plans depending on the length of your stay, this is really helpful. The bulk of the book follows the traditional geographical excursion with suggested side trips, essentially what to do and see in each area. There are also chapters dedicated to Spanish phrases that is pretty basic stuff like where is(donde esta....?),numbers and days of the week, in case you forget in English while you are in paradise.A feature I really liked was the section that uses the local terms which is different from traditional Spanish. it is the regional phrases that help you win over the locals like tengo una goma (I have a hangover) or donde esta la machita? ( where is the blond woman?).There are other language aids like useful ,travel, emergency and hotel terms terms and of course basics. If you are not a Spanish speaker these terms should be useful in a pinch. The book is very colorful (as is Costa Rica)and nearly every page is a visual delight to further entice you to include this area in your planned trip. There is also a section on the flora and fauna with drawings depicting the described animal or flower. Curiously they are not drawn in color! What a shame.I guess thet figured there were enough throughout the book. The maps are spectacular throughout the book, especially the ones highlighting the Best Of Places, National Parks and Preserves and a full size pocket pull out map of Costa Rica. The general index is useful for quick reference. Their is also an accommodations index which is helpful in finding that place to stay if you stray from your planned trip. I really liked this travel aid. If you are planning a trip to Costa Rica I say you can't go wrong with the practical and insightful information given in this 2010 edition in full color. Highly recommended for your trip to Costa Rica, the Ticos and it's beautiful land and culture await.
Not the Best March 6, 2010 Ian Pitchforth (Tamarindo Costa Rica) This guide book does a poor job at featuring the lower end lodges. The bus information was helpful in San Jose and the common phases section was helpful too. If you are traveling on a budget and plan on staying in youth hostels, I would not recommend this guide book.

Great Information Poor Construction February 28, 2010 Kinger7102 (VA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought both the Frommer's and Fodor's Costa Rica guide book. I've used Frommer's more so far. I prefer something about how it is laid out and written (but I can't exactly put my finger on why). Both provide great information on multiple activities.
The biggest problem? The first time I opened the book the binding broke. I intend to update this review after the trip but right now I'm very disappointed with the quality.
Excellent, thorough resource! February 24, 2010 L. K. Messner 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Typical of the Frommers guides, this is an outstanding resource for planning travel. It gives a comprehensive and helpful overview of pretty much everything you'd need to know in planning a trip to Costa Rica. Excellent & recommended.
