5 out of 5 stars Excelllent up-to-date complete guide to Costa Rica!   August 26, 2010
Bond... James Bond (Denver, CO)
I previously visited Costa Rica twice and am very pleased with the amount of information in this Fodor's guide. This special-edition "Gold Guide" is replete to lots of color photos, and I really liked the 639-page book's happy balance of still being predominantly packed with useful text with enough color photos included along the way to entice you visually and whet your appetite. Most Fodor's and Frommer's guides do not include many color photos, while other travel books include too many color photos and not enough text content. This book leans towards being mainly text with picture accompaniment, instead of having lots of photos at the expense of text. In particular, I really liked this guide's expanded coverage of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and the separate "In Focus" spotlight sections on coffee, canopy tours, beaches, birdwatching, surfing, SCUBA and snorkeling, and sportfishing. A great guide book worthy of a great country!!

5 out of 5 stars Great resource   July 15, 2010

I greatly enjoyed having this book at hand for our recent trip to Costa Rica--the info was spot on, well organized, clearly presented and comprehensive. That said, in terms of my favorite book, it might get beaten out by Frommer's similar guidebook, which had a few more specific recommendations and reasons for those recommendations; at times, the Fodor's guide seemed a bit more general. But those are minor quibbles... this is a great book that should make any traveler to Costa Rica get the most out of his/her experience.

I really like the book, lots of information, and the map will be very helpfull. We are leaving for Costa Rica in September.

1 out of 5 stars This book is for middle-aged, retired people with money   June 23, 2010

This book is only useful to people who want to spend $250/night to stay in resorts and ride horseback or fly ultralight planes around Costa Rica. If you're looking to have fun jumping off waterfalls or staying up late chatting it up in hostels with other young travelers, get the Lonely Planet tour guide. I'll admit I was fooled into buying this because of all the color pictures. If I would have followed the recommendations of this book, I would never have seen how the Ticos really live. This book is only good if you want to know how old, rich tourists do Costa Rica. They should put age recommendations on these things.

5 out of 5 stars Una guía de viajes muy bien   June 16, 2010

After an extensive introduction that includes the primary focus of most travel to Costa Rica, Fodor's provides detailed information on each of the most likely vacation location. Tropical Rainforest, Volcanoes (Arenal, Rincon de la Vieja, Poas), canopy tours and zip line tours, even the wetlands and mangroves are covered thoroughly, with Adventure Highlights with vivid orange borders for those interested in skimming. For each location there are highlighted flora and fauna - I'll be on the lookout for the strangler fig and the three-toed-sloth because I'm not that great of a photographer - but the colorful highlights of the various birds and frogs are the most eye-catching.

The following nine chapters explore nearly every facet of Costa Rica, and provide the necessary details about lodging, finances, tourism, local flair, plenty of maps and comprehensive geographical data, tons of beautifully enticing photos, and various tidbits for travelers wishing not to miss a thing.

I was particularly pleased to see a multiple-page section devoted to scuba diving and the wildlife indigenous to the area, as well as several pages of surfing information. Both sections, while not quite the typical forest and/or beach, are invaluable for "off the beaten path"-travelers.

Overall, the guide is well laid-out and has more information than can be digested or accomplished in one visit to this beautiful country. Add in a large, detachable map and a couple pages of introductory yet useful Spanish phrases, and there is not a stone unturned.

Jason Elin
